Does llms.txt actually work?

llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain-text file at your domain root listing your most important pages for language models. No major AI vendor has committed to consuming it, so treat it as low-cost and speculative rather than as an established ranking factor. Publishing one takes minutes and does no harm; it should not be prioritised over crawler access and server-side rendering.

The idea borrows from robots.txt and sitemap.xml: a markdown-formatted file at /llms.txt giving a language model a curated map of your site, so it does not have to infer structure from navigation and internal links.

What the evidence actually shows

As of mid-2026, no major AI vendor has publicly committed to reading llms.txt as a ranking or retrieval input. Adoption among site owners has outpaced adoption among the systems it targets.

We include it in our scans and flag it as low severity for that reason. Anyone selling llms.txt as the key to AI visibility is overselling it.

Where it belongs on your list

After crawler access and server-side rendering, not before. If AI crawlers cannot fetch your pages, or your content only exists after hydration, an llms.txt file changes nothing.

Once those are handled, publishing one costs a few minutes and carries a small option value if adoption arrives.
